The First Generation Of Computers

Generation of computers refer to the gap between the development of computers in terms of technology.

Each generation of computer is characterized by a major technology development that fundamentally changed the way computers operate, resulting in smaller, cheaper and more powerful, efficient and reliable device.

They are the first, second, third, fourth and fifth generation.

The first generation of computers ( 1940 - 1956 )

The first generation of computers used vacuum tubes for circuitry and magnetic drums for memory and were often large, taking up entire rooms.

They were very expensive to operate and consume lots of electricity. They generated a lot of heat which were often the cause of malfunctions.

They relied on machine language to perform operations and they could only solve one problem at a time.

Examples of the first generation of computers

1. Electronic Number Integrator and Computer (ENIAC)

2. Universal Automatic Computer (UNIVAC)

3. Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Calculator (EDSEC)

4. Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer (EDVAC)

5. IBM701 and IBM 650

Note: IBM stands for International Business Machine.
